Senise, Basilicata
Nestled in the heart of Basilicata, Senise is known for its charming old town, historic churches, and stunning views of the surrounding countryside. As you wander the town, you’ll find many balconies draped in peppers that have been left out to dry to make a local specialty called “cruschi” which is dialect for crunchy. Senise is enchanting, but even more so in the fall, as its landscapes are adorned with the warm colors of autumn, making it an ideal time to explore the countryside and indulge in local dishes.

Altamura, Puglia
Altamura is admired for its perfectly preserved medieval architecture and ancient city walls. The temperatures in the Fall season make exploring its historic center a pleasure. But the real treat of this season is the chance to witness the olive harvest in the surrounding groves. Altamura is also famous for its unique bread-making traditions with recipes and methods that have remained relatively unchanged since the Middle Ages.

Morano Calabro, Calabria
Listed as one of Italy’s “100 Most Beautiful Villages,” Morano Calabro, this medieval hill town offers a well-preserved old town with narrow alleyways and beautiful architecture. In the fall, you can enjoy scenic hiking and outdoor exploration in the Pollino National Park nearby. Enjoy leisurely walks through forests adorned with the vibrant colors of autumn foliage, or take part in an excursion to hunt for truffles or mushrooms. There is a certain serenity here, making it an ideal destination for those seeking a peaceful escape with a dose of outdoor adventure during the fall season.

Paestum, Campania
Paestum, located in the Campania region of Southern Italy, is often overlooked by travelers who tend to include the ancient city of Pompeii in their itinerary. We get it! Pompeii is a fascinating place to visit, but Paestum is also worth considering for its exceptionally well-preserved ancient Greek temple dating back to the 6th and 5th centuries BC. This archaeological treasure offers a captivating journey back in time, allowing visitors to explore the grandeur of antiquity within a tranquil and picturesque setting. But why is this a good destination for the autumn season? Well, the cooler temperatures make walking through the ancient ruins much more enjoyable than in the scorching heat of the summer. It also has fewer tourists, making the experience that much more enjoyable.

Siracusa, Sicily
Siracusa, located on the southeastern coast of Sicily, has a rich historical legacy and a remarkable blend of ancient Greek ruins, Baroque architecture, and vibrant local culture. The old town, located on the charming island of Ortigia, is a UNESCO World Heritage site that begs to be visited. During the fall months, you can enjoy the mild Mediterranean climate and wander around the picturesque streets and quaint piazzas while enjoying the stunning sea views. Don’t forget to visit the famous market to get a feel for what it’s like to live on this southern Italian island and to check out the local seasonal foods that you’d otherwise miss during the other seasons.
