There is something about the Christmas season that makes you feel all warm and cozy inside. That Christmas-y feeling you get as December unfolds and the temperatures begin to drop and perhaps, if you’re lucky, a sprinkling of snow falls outside.

In Italy, the Mercatini di Natale, or Christmas Markets, are popping up everyone and we can’t be more excited about it. One of our favorite things to do in Calabria during the Christmas season is visit the Christmas markets, there’s nothing quite like it to get you into the holiday spirit.

Here are three great Christmas markets to check out in Calabria:

Cosenza
The Christmas market in Cosenza seems to grow with each year. The Villa Nuovo transforms into a winter wonderland featuring festive décor, creative gift ideas and anything you could possibly need for your presepe. You can also sample some traditional foods such as the “cullurielli”, a fried dough which can be eaten plain or sprinkled with sugar. The market is for everyone, you can even take the kids to meet and take photos with Santa Claus and his wife, Mrs. Claus.

The market runs from November 23 – January 5
Piazza della Vittoria
Open from 9:00am – 8:00pm.

Scilla
The Christmas Market, now in its third year, takes place in the charming historic centre of Scilla. On December 17th and 18th, you can experience everything from handcrafted gifts, Christmas décor, street artists, theatrical performances and, of course, a visit from Santa Claus, The market will conclude with a wonderful fireworks display.

Piazetta Largo Piano

Pentedatillo
Pentedatillo is a ghost town in Reggio Calabria that comes to life again during the Christmas season. On December 17 and 18, this ancient hamlet becomes a Christmas Village inviting you to come and explore. Wander around this magical place, through the narrow alleys, to find village artisans showcasing their unique creations. You can also try a “guastedda”, a traditional food from the Grecanica area and, if you have little ones, you can expect lots of surprises and entertainment.

The Christmas Village runs from December 17 – 18
