Welcome to a journey through Puglia, a region where the sunlight hits the stone with a particular golden hue and the traditions of the Mediterranean remain vividly alive. Each stop is designed as a deep dive into the local rhythm, connecting you with the history and the people who define the southern Italian spirit.

Itinerary for Puglia: Culture, Cuisine, and a Bit of Bella Vita Tour

Day 1: Sunday, Sept 5Buongiorno, Bari - Benvenuti a Puglia!

Bari greets you with the salt air of the Adriatic and the rhythmic tapping of knives on wooden pasta boards. Dive into the Old Town’s labyrinth, where the grand shadows of St. Nicholas and San Sabino dance across ancient stone. From the legendary “orecchiette street” to hidden sacred crypts, you’ll feast on street-side delicacies and soak in sea-facing squares. Your Puglian adventure starts here … vibrant, timeless, and delicious!

Day 2: Monday, Sept 6Taste and Tour: From Altamura’s Historic Bread to Matera’s Caves

Today starts at a historic Altamura bakery where the world-famous PDO bread has been coming out of the same ovens for centuries, followed by a stroll to the cathedral and a stop for Amaro Padre Peppe and the local pastry known as Tetta della Monaca. The afternoon shifts to Matera, explored by Ape Calessino through the ancient Sasso Caveoso neighborhood, where cave houses, churches, and valley views have been stopping people cold since long before James Bond came to film here.

Day 3: Tuesday, Sept 7The Museum, the Villa, and the Garden

Today brings morning and lunch on your own before heading to the Mucci Museum in Andria to pay tribute to a confectionery family that has been producing Italy’s iconic sugar-coated almonds since 1894. The museum walks you through the full history and craft behind these colorful celebrations in a way that makes the whole tradition click. From there, the afternoon moves to a private villa in the countryside, where a local family opens their kitchen and garden for an authentic Puglian cooking experience.

Day 4: Wednesday, Sept 8Trulli Amazing

Most people walk through Locorotondo and take photos. You’ll walk through it with the man who builds it. A master trullaro who has spent his life learning the ancient art of stacking stone without a single drop of mortar, he knows every secret, every technique, every story hiding in the chianca stone beneath your feet. From there, Alberobello looks like it leapt off the pages of a storybook, its iconic trulli earning it a well-deserved spot on the UNESCO World Heritage list, and now you’ll see it through completely different eyes.

.

Day 5: Thursday, Sept 9Papier-Mâché, Palaces, and a Basilica After Dark

Today you’ll spend the day in Lecce, one of the finest Baroque cities in all of Italy, starting with a private guided tour. A papier-mâché class introduces a centuries-old Salento craft that combines paper and clay to create statues. After free time to shop, enjoy lunch, and explore on your own, the group reconvenes for an evening aperitivo. The Basilica of Santa Croce then opens for an immersive evening of light, music, and projection that brings the golden Baroque stone to life in a completely unexpected way.

Day 6: Friday, Sept 10 The Pigments of the Palmento

Explore a 150-year-old cascina in the Cupa Valley, a sanctuary of Salento’s rural soul. Join Giorgia and Francesco through indigenous Negroamaro vineyards and botanical paths filled with rare, forgotten fruits. Inside the ancient stone palmento, you’ll use the deep, ruby pigments of the estate’s wine to paint your own masterpiece. This tactile morning concludes with a slow, farm-to-table lunch, celebrating a century of sustainable traditions and the region’s rich biodiversity.

Day 7: Saturday, Sept 11Ciao, Puglia

Your journey ends with a transfer to the airport, but Italy has a way of staying with you long after you leave. The flavors, the faces, the moments that caught you off guard. You’ll be back.

FAQs

Are Custom Vacations just for independent travelers or can I have a guide and/or driver with me during my trip?

We love private tours and can often include extra fun elements that aren’t available to individual travelers. If you’d like a bilingual escort or driver, just let us know. We’ll be happy to plan your custom vacation accordingly.

What is the differences in a travel consultant, a travel agent and a tour operator?

This is a great question because there is sometimes overlap amongst the three which leads to confusion. To keep it quick though, a travel consultant is a local expert, meaning she only focuses on a specific part of the world, in some cases one country, in other cases (like mine) part of one country. This person usually lives (or has lived for an extended amount of time) in the place she consults on and has an intimate knowledge of the area.

A travel agent is similar in that she helps her clients put their trips together. A travel agent can specialize in a country but oftentimes hasn’t lived there and/or may not have traveled to all of the places her clients are going. A travel agent can search for and book flights and cruises that travel consultants can’t or choose not to book.

I often work with travel agents who want to ensure they are offering the best service to their clients. The travel agent will contact me and together we’ll put the Calabria/southern Italy section of their client’s vacation together.

A tour operator packages trip elements into travel packages that they either sell directly or through travel agents. Some travel consultants (like me) are registered as a tour operator for legal business purposes.

Travel agents are paid by commission – why don’t you just accept commission?

When you book a custom vacation, there is more going into your trip than simply recommending a hotel or a cooking class. I am invested in my clients’ trips and I work with them to choose the right base locations, to map out their ideal route and to ensure the hotels, guides, excursions and activities are right for them.

It’s been estimated the average person spends 100 hours researching, planning and booking a vacation. My clients either don’t have this kind of time to devote to planning their trip or they want to ensure they are making the right decisions for their vacation.

Besides the fact that I’m being paid by my clients to plan their trips, I choose not to accept commissions from hotels, car companies, chefs or other vendors because I don’t like the potential conflict of interest. If I don’t accept commission from anyone, then my clients know I always have their best interest in mind.

Do you book flights?

I don’t – but I can either coordinate with your travel agent, recommend an agent to you for group travel or tell you about the airlines I personally choose when I’m traveling.
