10-Day Tour of Calabria and Basilicata


Day 1:
– Arrive in Lamezia Terme International Airport and pick up your rental car.

– Drive north along Calabria’s Riviera Dei Cedri to the ancient Norman village of Scalea.

– After settling into your sea-front hotel room, you will have time for a walk around the beachfront neighborhood and a chance to visit Scalea’s famous 16th Century castle.

– Enjoy a traditional Calabrese dinner in one of the oldest and most celebrated trattorie in Scalea.

– Spend the night in Scalea.

Day 2:
– Enjoy a romantic Italian breakfast on the balcony facing the Tyrrhenian Sea.

– Drive northeast into the Pollino National Park, one of the newest and largest national parks in the country. There you will explore a limestone cave that dates back to 4470 BC and see a cave drawing that dates to the Paleolithic era.

– After having a leisurely lunch near the cave, you will drive back to Scalea and spend the evening shopping in the historical center, tasting homemade liquor from the Cedri Riviera and discovering 3rd Century Byzantine mosaics few tourists ever see.

– Dine at a local pizzeria and then enjoy an evening stroll with the locals, stopping for award-winning gelato along the way.

– Spend the night in Scalea.

Day 3:
– After breakfast at your hotel, you will drive a few kilometers south to nearby Diamante, The Pearl of the Tyrrhenian, famous for its murals and peperoncino chili peppers.

– There you will explore the historical center, walk among the hand-painted murals and enjoy a guided tour of the Chili Pepper Museum.

– You will be treated to a wine-tasting and appetizer tour before settling in for a leisurely Calabrese lunch, specially created to suit your group’s taste.

– After lunch, you will return to Scalea where you can either sleep off the remains of your lunch or visit the area’s other museums and castles.

– Spend the night in Scalea.

Day 4:
– You will enjoy your final breakfast in Scalea, then drive north to Maratea, the romantic fisherman village in neighboring Basilicata.

– Spend the morning visiting the 72-foot Christ of Maratea statue and the Basilica of San Biagio, then shop for homemade local crafts along the main street.

– After a quick lunch, you will have time to explore Maratea’s natural grottoes.

– In the early evening, you will meet your personal chef and cooking instructor and attend a local cooking class, where you will learn to create southern Italian specialties, pastas and desserts.

– Spend the night in an elegant centuries-old villa in Maratea.

Day 5:
– Enjoy an invigorating Yoga class on your hotel’s panoramic terrace before breakfast.

– Your personal sailing guide will meet you at your hotel and together you will set sail on a 52-foot sailboat for a day-long adventure in the Mediterranean Sea.

– In the evening, you will have a relaxing dinner on your hotel’s terrace.

– Spend the night in Maratea.

Day 6:
– After breakfast, you will check out of your hotel and drive east to Matera, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

– After a late lunch, you will check into your hotel that has been carved from thousands-year old Sassi stone dwellings.

– In the evening, your English-language guide will meet you at your hotel for your “Matera by Night” tour. Here, you will be guided on a personalized tour of Matera that will feature the historical, cultural, naturalistic, architectural, anthropological or contemporary components you pre-chose at booking.

– You will enjoy a casual dinner on the terrace of a nearby restaurant that overlooks the Sassi district.

– Spend the night in Matera.

Day 7:
– Enjoy breakfast at your hotel, then spend the morning visiting the museums and historical churches located in the Matera’s Medieval and Renaissance districts.

– After a traditional Basilicatese lunch, you can choose to either relax in your hotel’s thermal pools or explore more of Matera on your own.

– You will go out for a night of pizza and an evening stroll in Matera’s historical center.

– Spend the night in Matera.

Day 8:
– After having breakfast at your hotel, you will check out and drive southwest to Calabria’s most famous wine region, Cirò.

– You will enjoy a wine tasting and lunch at one of Calabria’s most renowned restaurants and settle into your 17th Century farmhouse hotel.

– In the evening, you will enjoy a light dinner on the beach.

– Spend the night in Cirò.

Day 9:
– You will have breakfast at your hotel, then head to a nearby winery for a morning tour of one of Calabria’s most well-known DOC vineyards.

– You will have lunch at the winery, then head south to visit one of Calabria’s most beloved castles.

– After visiting the small town and exploring the castle, you can choose to either snorkel in the waves that brush the castle or visit the nearby Aquarium.

– You’ll have a light dinner at a nearby trattoria, then return to Cirò.

– Spend the night in Cirò.

Day 10:
– Enjoy breakfast overlooking the Cirò vineyards, then check out of your hotel and drive to Lamezia Terme

– Drop off your rental car at the airport and say arrivederci to Calabria and Basilicata.
