Calabria and Sicily Tour Itinerary

This 8-day small group tour shows travelers the highlights in southern Calabria and eastern Sicily while introducing them to fabulous “hidden” destinations known only to the locals!

Day 1:

Benvenuti in Italia

You’ll arrive in Reggio Calabria airport by 3:45PM where you’ll be met by your bilingual travel host and driver who will transfer you to your luxury B&B in the center of town. You’ll have a welcome drink and will have time to settle into your room. Then, in the early evening you’ll have a twilight orientation walk along the lungomare which has been called “the most beautiful kilometer in Italy.” You’ll end the evening with an abundant traditional Calabrese aperitivo.

Day 2:

Ghost Stories and Bergamot Groves

After breakfast, you’ll explore the tip of the toe by visiting one of the region’s most interesting towns – Pentidattilo. This abandoned ghost town takes its name from the Greek word meaning “five fingers” – so-called for the eerie geographical rock formation that beckons travelers to its borders. We’ll visit the village museum, the main church and learn about the tragic events of 1686 that continue to haunt this tiny village. For lunch, it’s over to our friend Ugo’s where you’ll have a chance to visit his bergamot orchard and have lunch overlooking the intriguing Amendolea Valley. In the evening, you’ll return to Reggio Calabria. Evening on your own.

Day 3:

Caves, Castles and Homer’s Odyssey

This morning, we’ll head north to Pizzo Calabro – a pretty fishing village on the Tyrrhenian Coast that is home to a 17th century cave church and 15th century stone castle made famous by Napoleon’s brother-in-law, Jacques Murat. We’ll have lunch in the area, then will cool off with Pizzo’s famous hazelnut-chocolate gelato truffles.

In the evening, we’ll drive to nearby Scilla for a guided walk of the ancient fisherman village of Chianalea. We’ll explore the narrow cobblestone streets while remembering Homer’s legend of Scylla, a beautiful mythological sea creature. In the port we may see one of Scilla’s antique sword-fishing boats. After our walk, you’ll have time on your own for dinner and to enjoy the unique atmosphere of Scilla “by night.”

Day 4:

Living Like the Locals

You’ll have the morning on your own to visit the museums, shop on the “Corso” main street or relax on the beach. In the early evening, you’ll drive a few miles outside of town for an exclusive pizza night farewell to Calabria festa beneath the stars at a private villa, complete with professional pizzaiolo pizza maker and wood-burning oven.

Day 5:

Voyage Across the Straits

You’ll have breakfast, then will bid farewell to Calabria and take the 20-minute ferry across the Straits of Messina and onto Sicily. After a quick noontime stop at the charming Messina clock tower, we’ll head to Ganzirri – a lake at the northeastern tip of the island unknown (and un-visited) even by Italians. We’ll have a scenic seafood lunch and then will continue to Taormina. Once there, you’ll check into your sea-view room in the center of town. After a welcome drink, you’ll have a chance to relax before meeting your hosts for an optional orientation tour of the town. Evening and dinner on your own.

Day 6:

Buongiorno Sicilia! – Warming Up on Mt. Etna

After breakfast we’ll head to nearby Mount Etna – Europe’s largest and most active volcano. We’ll ascend its volcanic slopes, then will tour an 18th century winery where we’ll have a late lunch and wine-tasting amidst chestnut trees. In the afternoon we’ll return to Taormina where you’ll have the evening on your own to enjoy this chic and glamorous town.

Day 7:

Taormina’s Hidden Treasures

After breakfast, we’ll meet our local friend, Davide, for a morning tour of his hometown. In addition to the popular Ancient Greek Theatre, he’ll show us some of his favorite hidden spots. Following the tour, you’ll have a typical summertime Sicilian “lunch” of granita with cream and sweet rolls. You’ll have the afternoon and early evening free to visit the beaches, shop in town or continue exploring the village.

In the evening, we’ll head to the magical terrace of a medieval villa for our farewell dinner. We’ll enjoy sea views, savor Sicilian wine and dine on local delicacies in an atmosphere only Sicily can offer.

Day 8:

Ciao Sicilia!

After breakfast, you’ll depart for the Catania airport. Ciao bella Italia!

*Note: This tour starts at Reggio Calabria airport and departs at Catania airport.
