We’d known about Colavolpe for years—it’s one of Calabria’s most iconic confectionery brands. But it wasn’t until a few years ago that we officially met Miranda Colavolpe.
A few years back, Gianluca and Cherrye were invited to her family’s factory in Belmonte Calabro, where we got an inside look at how they transform their delicious figs into the delicious treats we know and love.
Miranda took us through the factory, then showed us around her whimsical shop filled with so many goodies!
From the moment we met, we knew we’d found a friend. Miranda’s passion for her craft and her family’s rich history left a lasting impression, and Colavolpe has become even more special to us.
Colavolpe’s story began in 1910 when Nicola Colavolpe, originally from Amalfi, moved to Calabria and discovered the potential of the humble fig. Inspired by the region’s rich agricultural landscape, he created the company’s first product: Crocette. Named for their distinctive cross shape, these fig-based treats are filled with Calabrian walnuts or candied orange peel, made even more special with a secret glaze.
As the family’s second generation took over, they introduced Fioroni, figs covered in dark or white chocolate. In the 1990s, the company expanded with more innovative products, always staying true to its roots.
Today, Colavolpe continues to use the prized Fico Dottato di Calabria, a variety with DOP certification, ensuring every treat is of the highest quality. With a focus on tradition, quality ingredients, and beautifully crafted packaging, Colavolpe remains a symbol of Calabrian craftsmanship and sweet innovation.
These carefully selected, high-quality figs are a true taste of Southern Italy. Each one is lovingly stuffed with crunchy almonds and fragrant candied orange peel, then gently baked to enhance its natural sweetness. They are then covered in a rich layer of extra dark chocolate, creating a luxurious bite that’s equal parts rustic tradition and refined indulgence. A small but mighty treat that embodies the heart (and sweet tooth!) of Calabria.
