Overview

With 500 miles of coastline, three national parks and thousands of acres of olive trees, vineyards and citrus groves, Calabria is one of the most diverse regions in the bel paese. That diversity, combined with the enduring influence of Calabria’s past conquerors, notably the Greeks, Spaniards and Arabs, is echoed in Calabria’s unique cuisine.

From Italy’s largest national park in the northern Calabria to the rugged coastline of the sun-kissed south, we have spent years eating our way through Calabria … and we want to share our Calabria with you, one table at a time.

The Calabrian Table Tour Itinerary

Eating Through Calabria with Tania and Cherrye

Day1
Day 1

Medieval Moonlight
You will arrive at Lamezia Terme International Airport by 2:30PM and be met by us, Cherrye Moore and Tania Pascuzzi, your bilingual hosts, who will join you throughout The Calabrian Table Tour.

We will transfer via private car service to northern Calabria. There we will check into our mountain retreat that is surrounded in flowering, green gardens with a dramatic backdrop of Pollino’s swooping hills and mountains.

We will have time to unpack, settle into the hotel and explore the agriturismo’s gardens.

In the early evening we will visit one of “the 100 most beautiful villages in Italy,” and stroll through the medieval alleys. We will end the night with a welcome dinner.

Day2
Day 2

Zotërote flini arbërisht? Calabria’s Albanian Influences
After breakfast, we will visit the Ionian Sea, home of Italy’s oldest licorice factory (and with records dating to the 1500s, the world’s oldest family-run business!) We will tour the factory and small museum, then will have a traditional lunch nearby.

In the early evening, we will visit the nearby village of Civita where we will explore the heart and soul of Pollino’s Albanian culture. We will have an escorted visit to the town and have a chance to see the Ragnanello Gorge, the deepest gorge in Europe. For dinner, we will feast at a local Albanian restaurant whose dishes feature the sweet paprika that is commonly used in these villages.

Day3
Day 3

Family-style Cooking and Calabrian Wine
This morning we will meet Signora Aqualina and her daughters at their family agriturismo. We will cook dishes typical of this part of the province, then feast on our special creations for lunch.

After a rest at the agriturismo, we will visit a local vineyard for a wine-tasting tour set underneath an ancient Oak. We’ll have dinner at the agriturismo.

Day4
Day 4

Hike and Harvest
We will spend the morning on a mild walking excursion through the Pollino Mountains. During our hike, we will encounter the rare and beautiful Lorica pine, a tree that is found only in this part of the world.

We will step back in time and stop for a picnic lunch, complete with local bread, frittata, salamis, local cheeses and wine, all set with a backdrop of pine trees and mountain views.

For dinner we will cook alongside Adriana and prepare a meal featuring, among other things, ingredients found in the mountains. We will end the day with a farewell dinner, complete with local music.

Day5
Day 5

Gelato Truffles in Pizzo
After breakfast, we will say goodbye to our friends in the Pollino Mountains and head to the aquamarine waters of Calabria’s west coast. On our way, we will stop in the coastal village of Pizzo Calabro.

We’ll have the chance to stretch our legs with a guided walking tour of this 14th Century fisherman’s village and visit the 17th Century Chiesa di Piedigrotta tufa cave.

We will dine at one of our favorite seafood restaurants in the Vibo province and will have a chance to taste the famous tartufo di Pizzo gelato. We will continue on to Tropea where we will settle into our bed and breakfast, located in an ancient palazzo in the historical center of this 16th Century medieval village.

You’ll have the evening on your own in town.

Day6
Day 6

Lunch in an Italian Villa
You’ll have breakfast, then we will visit the famous Capo Vaticano – listed in a French magazine as one of the world’s 100 most beautiful beaches. Then, it is on to our friend Elida’s private villa where we will be greeted by the family and enjoy a leisurely, typical southern Italian lunch in her garden.

You’ll have the evening on your own to visit the beach or shop in Tropea.

Day7
Day 7

Peppe’s Farewell Feast
After breakfast you will enjoy a walking tour of the town, then have a light lunch of homemade antipasti and seasonal vegetables.

In the early evening we will travel to the hills above Tropea where we will spend an unforgettable evening cooking at Chef Peppe’s vineyard. We will enjoy delicious Calabrese wine and homemade antipasto as we learn to cook with one of Calabria’s most well-loved and respected chefs. We’ll enjoy our farewell dinner with Peppe and his family.

Day8
Day 8

Nivedemo Calabria!
After breakfast we will transfer to the Lamezia Terme International Airport and you will say Nivedemo Calabria.

The Calabrian Table Tour

What type of traveler would most enjoy this tour?

The tour caters to English-speaking travelers who enjoy unique opportunities and one-of-a-kind experiences. This is not a flag-following tour, but rather an opportunity for travelers to immerse themselves in authentic Italy. Most of the events in our itinerary are exclusive to our tour, meaning you won’t find them anywhere else online. In fact, many of these activities are so exclusive that we can’t even offer them to our private clients or guarantee they’ll be included in future tours.

How many people can join the tour?

Besides the fact that we believe the most memorable travel experiences happen in small groups, our hotels, restaurants, chefs, cooks and guides are either part of a family-run business, an independent provider … or someone’s mamma, all of which cater specifically to small groups.

The Small Group Heritage Tour(s) of Calabria is limited to a maximum of 10 travelers.

The Best of Southern Calabria and Eastern Sicily Tour and The Calabian Table Tour are both limited to 12 travelers.

What is the weather like in Calabria in June and October?

Both the early summer and early fall are beautiful times to visit Calabria, especially the mountain villages that are included in our itinerary. However, the weather can be unpredictable. The last couple of years we’ve have had nice, breezy nights along the lungomare as well as in the mountains. We’ll keep you updated about the weather as our trip approaches.

What’s so great about Calabrian cuisine?

Calabrian cooking is loved throughout Italy and has started gaining in popularity abroad. However, when you really examine Calabrian cuisine, you’ll see that it is as diverse as the region from which it hails. Although robust wine, homemade bread, fresh pasta, seasonal fruits and vegetables and the famous peperoncino are seen throughout the region, each area has their specialty. It is those unique ingredients and traditional dishes that we are exploring in this tour.

What happens if I can’t make the group transfer to the first hotel?

We hope everyone can make it to the airport in time for the group transfer to our first hotel. However, if you can’t, we will help you arrange a private transfer so you can catch up with the group. Additional fees may apply.

How do I reserve my spot?

To reserve your spot, email Cherrye at cherrye@mybellavita.com. We’ll send you a registration form and a copy of our terms and conditions. Your reservation will be confirmed when we receive your deposit.

How do I make a payment?

Payments are made in US dollars to My Bella Vita Travel, LLC. Detailed information and a payment schedule will be sent with your registration form.

What should we pack for the trip?

I’ve written a variety of posts on packing for Calabria and southern Italy, including How to Pack a Carry-on Suitcase, Carry-on Packing List, Essential Travel Gear for Your Trip to Southern Italy, Five Things to Pack for Your Trip to Italy and Five Things to Skip When Packing for Italy. Additionally, a packing list will be sent to you in your final packet.

What if I want to extend my vacation?

If you want to extend your vacation, you are in luck. Cherrye designs custom itineraries and vacations and is happy to assist you in adding days either before or after the tour. Additional fees may apply.

I’d love to do the tour, but I’m unavailable for your published dates. Do you anticipate adding new dates this year?

We are open to adding new dates or even helping couples and individuals who contact us find a mutually-agreed upon date that works for everyone. If you have a group of six or more, we can do the Small Group Heritage Tour of Calabria as a private tour – exclusive for your group. If you have a private group of 8 or more we can do the Calabrian Table Tour or Southern Calabria and Eastern Sicily Tour. Contact us for details and availability.

Do you book flights?

I don’t-but I can either coordinate with your travel agent, recommend an agent to you for group travel or tell you about the airlines I personally choose when I’m traveling.

So, will you be with us on our tour?

You bet! I’m part of the team that created the Calabrian Table Tour, The Small Group Heritage Tour of Calabria and The Yoga in Calabria Retreat and the Best of Calabria and Sicily Tour. I wouldn’t miss ’em!
